Interview about ecological state in Nao-ao South River

* Date: Dec. 6, 2006

* Location: Chungyueh River.

* Interviewee: Ching-tang Yeh (President of Kiyang Community Development Association)

* Content of interview:

Chi-an: which are original species in South River? which are exotic species? Why?

(1) In Kiyang area, Hair Crab is one of original species.

(2) Rock Speckle and Brook Brother are exotic species.

(3)Exotic species existed in this river when Buddhism prevailed.

Yu-wen: In the class, the teacher told the students South River was abundant with aquatic creature in the early stage. For instance, the water crabs and eels could be seen anywhere in the runnels of the community. Is that true? Why did we see nothing there?

Indeed, there were a number of water crabs creeping everywhere in the runnels and rivers in the early period. With times on, the ecological environment became worse, for example, the number of water crabs declined. That is really a worrying thing.

Jun-an: a participatory project is posted in front of the Office of the Community Development Association.  Well, what is the purpose of this project?

It is something about the plans and support measures aimed to protect the water crabs in the Chungyueh River.

Yi-jie: In order to maintain the resources, it is very important to promote the education activities of protecting the river. Is there any consensus among the tribal people? And do they meet any obstacle?

(1) In the meeting of the community, we emphasized all the time that protective measures shall be taken to protect the unique ecology and culture in the Chungyueh River. Of course, it is more important that we have to protect our own resources by ourselves.

(2) If breach of regulation is found, the working personnel for the river will stop such violation.

Yu-lin: Now, we know that it is critical time to restore the aquatic creature in the South River. Director-General, could you like to say something to encourage us?

I hope that the children would lay emphasis on the importance of environment and resources in the Kiyang Village. And, all of us have to make efforts to protect the water crab and aquatic creature.

Interview about the ecological state in Nao-ao South River Afterthoughts of students

Chi-an: Mr.Yeh is very friendly, and has held many activities for the sake of the community. I hope that people in the Kiyang Village do not catch the water crabs any more, so there will be more and more water crabs.

Yu-wen: I think Mr.Yeh is very enthusiastic. After this interview, I know that water crabs become fewer and fewer because of excessive catching. I will tell my parents not to go fishing and catch fish, otherwise, its very easy to break the regulation. I am very happy in this interview.

Jia-ming: Director-General of the community described in detail, so these little children knew what he talked about very clearly. It is the duty of all the people in the Golden Ocean community to protect the aquatic organisms in the South River.

Jun-ying: I cannot believe there are so many fishes and crabs in the South River. If we make efforts to protect our environment with our warm hearts, the aquatic organisms will become more and more and the environment will also be more and more beautiful.

Yu-lin: This is a very clear and clean river. Because of the human activity, the beautiful environment was lost. So, I hope everyone should protect our hometown with public virtue.

Yi-jie: I think Mr. Yeh is a good person, and the uncles who protect the river are really working hard. I want to say thanks to them for the sake of the community.
