Interview with Nao-ao South River drainage area worker

Yu-lin: why this river is called “South River”? What’s the meaning?

It is called Nao-ao South River, because Kiyang is located south of Nan-ao. This river is very clear without any pollution.

Jia-ming: Where is the source of South River? Where is the dividing point between upper, middle reaches and lower reaches of South River. How long is the river?

(1) The source of South River is in Tonglan Mt.

(2) Upper reach is from the source behind the mountain. of Kiyang. Next to it is middle reach of Chungyueh River. The range of this river is more than 10 km.

Jun-an: What are the main branches of South River? What kinds of tourism resources do they have?

(1) The main branches include Small South River, Hong Boli, Bitan River, Knan, Chungyueh River and Wuming River.

(2) There are many deep pools in these branches, probably more than 20 ones. You can swim in this deep pools or have a leisure time there. It is very convenient!

Yi-jie: How many tribes are migrated to South River Area? Do you have any impressive tribe stories?

There were once 2 tribes migrated to South River Area, one is Qunos Tribe, the other is Old Wuta tribe. But now, they migrated to Kiyang Village, Bo-ai Road and Wuta Village.

A tribe named “Chongyueh” once lived in the mountain in middle reaches of South River Area. But they only lived for 2-3 years because the residents were hit by an infectious disease, called Maria Disease, i.e. today’s malaria. Many people died from Maria Disease. So Chongyueh tribe migrated frequently.

Yu-wen: We know that Nan-ao Town Hall is planning to name this brook as “Boat-Float River”. Do you think it is feasible? Why?

South River is designed to become Boat-Float River by Nan-ao Town Hall, with its aim of improving the sight-seeing conditions of this area. This may drive the economical development of Kiyang Village.

Jun-ying: The brook is very clean and clear, no wonder it is the hometown of Hair Crab and aricorhinus barbatulus. In addition to rich aquatic resources, we may develop some recreation activities here？

Our brook is very clean and rich of animals and plants. So, we can develop some activities such as paddling, boating, and brook tracing etc.

Yu-lin: we are very lucky for living in South River Area. The river is quite clean and we enjoy the beautiful scenery. We can swim and climb at our own will. How beautiful mountain and river! But I hope everybody could cherish and protect our clean environment, otherwise we will have nothing.

Jia-ming: Today we go to Hsiantan River to visit utas. I feel well because it is a fine day and the river is very clean. These make me in good temper. I am very happy to know that there are so many amusing places where we can catch polliwogs and swim. I must try my best to protect our environment.

Jun-an: South River is located at south of Nan-ao. It is a very clean brook. The stories about Chungyueh River tribes involve the migrations and other events.

Yi-jie: During today’s visit, we enjoyed the clear brook and high mountains. It’s a happy visit.

Yu-wen: After the interview, we went down to the river bank to catch polliwogs. It’s very interesting! If it is not cold, I even want to swim. When I saw the high mountains and peaceful river, I felt quite happy.

Jun-ying: After listening to the grandpa, I will share the stories with my parents. I will also tell my family not to catch fish, since we shall protect our tribe’s environment.
